Nicolich Laboratories were created
in 1932 and two years later the ophthalmologist, Doctor Miguel
Mérida, registered the name "Abéñula",
a synonym for eyelashes and patented this special pharmaceutical
formula with the Health Organisation under the name “Pomada
Oftalmer Nicholich Abénula Azul” (Blue Nicolich Oftalmer
Abéñula Ointment). From then on, the family company,
now a limited company, has produced a number of specialised products,
although dedication has always been given to its first product,
"ABEÑULA". The fame of Abeñúla
passed the frontiers of Spain and NICOLICH S.L. obtained the trust
of users and ophthalmologists alike and gained the prestigious
reputation that fills us with pride. We are proud of having been
in the market for more than seventy years, a guarantee which gives
us backing as a producer, always at the service of our clients,
in recognition of our predecessors work. |

In reference to the prominent figure of Doctor Miguel Mérida
Nicolich, our archives count on original letters written by
the poet Salvador Rueda, in which he gives thanks for the
Doctors labours as an ophthalmologist and a person, praising
the accuracy and the manner in which he treated the ill.
These feelings are reflected
in the following:
..."But you, great lapidary,
Diamond maker for the blind,
Whose hands are the irises,
And whose fingers are of light.
You, who to extinguished eyes,
Without life nor movement,
Tell them with your divine voice,
Come from the other hemisphere:
Relive for there are new rosesEmerge,
for there are new carnations ..."*
These verses come from the private archives of Nicolich S.L
Doctor Miguel Mérida Nicolich married Vera Blackstone and
before turning blind due to an unfortunate accident, left us with
a thesis on the eye disease, trachoma, and an extensive bibliography
of investigations. It was from this point on that he began to
become aware of sensorial deficiencies and created Málaga’s
school for the Deaf and Dumb.- The Mayor of the City, Mr. Gálvez,
in recognition of the magnitude of the Doctors work, recorded
his sympathies in an obituary ...: the maestro of light has been
taken away from us for ever, the skilful executor of a difficult
example ..."
